Port of Lübeck grows in first quarter
Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG), which operates the German Baltic Sea port of Lübeck, has reported an 8% increase in its overall volumes in Q1/2021. Lockdowns in 2020 and this year did not affect cargo throughput, by and large. Growth was mainly driven by ro-ro and vehicles traffic. A substantial downward movement, exacerbated by the outbreak of Covid-19, was registered in the paper business.
The number of trucks passing through LHG’s terminals rose by 10%; unaccompanied traffic grew by 7%; imports and exports of new vehicles increased by 13%; the number of containers handled remained roughly at the previous year's level; and the volume of forest products fell by 24%.
Increased imports from the Baltic States and Russia contributed to a significant growth in timber handling; volumes more than doubled in this segment. (cd)
