Port of Helsinki misses black figures
In 2021, the Port of Helsinki’s cargo traffic showed a strong recovery from the impact of the corona pandemic. In total, the port even broke its all-time record with a total of 14.4 million t handled, exporting 7.7 million t (9.3%) and importing 6.6 million t (+5.6%) of imports.
Ro-ro traffic, in particular, increased strongly by 11.1% to 664'000 units. The three largest trade partners in terms of tonnes were the same as 2020: Estonia (5.5 Mt), Germany (3.4 Mt) and the Netherlands (1.4 Mt).
The port company’s turnover of EUR 68.8 million was 2.5% above the 2020 level, of which cargo (EUR 34 million) and vessel charges (EUR 13.5 million) contributed the lion's share (84%).
Despite improvements, the port recorded a loss of EUR 15 million in 2021. For the port, the 2020s will be filled with the development programme that will centralise traffic to West Harbour and Katajanokka Harbour. (sh)
