Port of Hamburg sets a steady course
In 2018, the port of Hamburg handled 135.1 million t of sea cargo, similar to the result of the previous year. One of the reasons for the slight decrease of 1% was a drop in bulk cargo volumes. Loaded container volumes remained stable.
In hinterland traffic, the port moved a total of 46.9 million t (+2.7%) in 2018 and 2.44 million teu (+ 4.7%) by rail, which confirmed Hamburg’s position as Europe’s leading railway port. With four new line services operated by ‘The Alliance’, the port expects additional cargo handling volumes of up to 500,000 teu in 2019.
Construction work on the channel adjustments of the lower and outer Elbe have already begun. For 2019 the port of Hamburg is counting on a 3-4% growth in container traffic. (kd)
