Port of Gothenburg on a rising tide again
The port of Gothenburg noted a pleasing upswing in 2018. Volume growth intensified during the year and was strongest during Q4/2018 with +27%. The increase can be compared with the downturn in volumes during the industrial dispute at the Swedish port’s container terminal in 2017.
Much of the freight is made up of Sweden’s basic industry products such as steel, paper and timber. The operator Mimab primarily handles the transloading of sawn timber between rail and ship at the port. Transloading activities of this nature rose by almost 20% in 2018 vis-à-vis 2017.
The container terminal’s box throughput was just below the 400,000 teu threshold last year, and rail-borne container volumes to/from the port rose by 13%. More than 60,000 units were handled at the Combi Terminal. (kd)
