Port of Cologne welcomes first LNG bunker station

The construction of Europe’s first permanent bunker station for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is in full swing. The LNG bunker station will be located in the port of Cologne (am Molenkopf 1). With the opening scheduled for June 2019, the LNG bunker station will be the first permanent location in Europe where barges can refuel with LNG.

Whereas barges are now typically supplied with LNG from tank trucks, the opening of this LNG bunker station offers new advantages for the inland shipping sector. These include greater flexibility thanks to 24/7 availability and much shorter bunker times.

The new LNG bunker station is part of the European Commission’s plans to implement an LNG infrastructure for roads and waterways. (kd)
