Port of Casablanca shows resilience
Morocco's port of Casablanca has reported its throughput figures for April 2020, the first month under Covid-19 anti-pandemic conditions. Total traffic recorded at the end of the month was at almost 10.5 million t, a surge of 6% compared to the same period in 2019.
Imports were especially strong, recording 6.8 million t against 6.2 million t or an increase of 10% year-on-year. Growth was mainly driven by the solid bulk sector (+ 9%).
On the other hand, export traffic experienced a moderate decrease of 1%, reaching a level of 3.63 million t in comparison to 3.66 million t for the same period in 2019.
Besides measures to protect personnel and clients from infection, Anouar Harrak, the director of the Port Authority of Casablanca, pointed out that since 4 May 2020, electronic delivery notes are now compulsory via the port net platform. (mw)
