Port of Brussels hits the mark
The inland port of Brussels witnessed a record year in 2021. Its waterway traffic amounted to more than 7 million t. In terms of own traffic by waterway – goods loaded and unloaded in Brussels – 2021 is the strongest year since the creation of the regional company of the Port of Brussels in 1993.
With nearly 5.5 million t, port activity was up 10% compared to the previous year. Overall throughput showed a 7% increase to reach 7.1 million t, a result tempered by the slight drop in transit traffic (–3%) which amounts to 1.66 million t for 2021.
In 2021, the environmental impact of inland navigation represented a saving of 664,000 trucks in and around Brussels, 103,000 t less of carbon in the atmosphere and EUR 26 million in savings in external costs. (sh)
