Port of Bilbao stays on course in 2023
The port of Bilbao finished 2023 with positive results, despite challenges like adverse weather that affected vessel arrivals. Total traffic reached 32.8 million t, slightly up from 2022. Notably, bulk liquids and solids posted an uptick and confirmed the port’s position as a hub for special transports.
The port's commitment to rail remained strong, with 29% of containers carried by train. Passenger numbers in regular line services and cruise ships combined surged by 26.5%.
The port's financial stability allowed it to continue ongoing sustainability projects, including the electrification of docks. Port charges remained unchanged to support business competitiveness.
Looking ahead, the port plans to award works for its final extension phase and begin the electrification of docks in 2024, with investments focused on energy transition, infrastructure, and digitalisation. (pb)
