Port of Antwerp launches its methanol project

By bringing together various companies located close to the port to cooperate in the sustainable production of methanol – an important raw material– the port of Antwerp is taking the next step towards deploying alternative sources of fuel and becoming a hub independent of CO2.

The pilot project aims at producing 4,000 to 8,000 t of sustainable methanol per year. Various activities that are already in operation in the port, such as electricity generation and the fuel and chemical industry, will be combined. The project is complex and challenging, but it will also be a “first” for Belgium.

Methanol is an important raw material with diverse applications in the chemical industry. It can also be used in many other sectors of the economy. Because of the strong presence of chemical companies in the port area, it is essential for the daily operation of the port. (kd)
