Port indices climbing worldwide, says Drewry

British maritime analyst Drewry has drawn some conclusions out of the latest development of its global container port throughput index. In July 2020, the index crossed the level of 130 points for the first time this year, but did not reach the same mark as in 2019.

Despite the rise of more than six points compared to the previous month, the index was 4.2 points lower than in July 2019. Drewry remains optimistic nevertheless: "As the global economy starts to recover from the first wave of Covid-19, we are starting to see clear signs of demand improving."

Moreover, Drewry's China container port throughput index surpassed the key milestone of 150 points in July 2020. So far, no other region has ever achieved this level. Trade all over Asia is recovering, yet the demand revival has been timid when compared with China. (cd)
