Platooning works better than expected
Operating electronically linked trucks on German motorways is safe, technically reliable and can be easily integrated into the routine of a logistics company. These are the key results of the world's first field test with truck platoons in real-life logistics operations.
As part of a research project, professional drivers employed by DB Schenker drove two electronically linked vehicles on the motorway No. 9 between Nuremberg and Munich for seven months.
The platooning system operated smoothly 98% of the time. Active interventions by the driver were necessary only once every 2,000 km, which was much less than expected. The field test also demonstrated savings in fuel consumption of 3% to 4%. (ben)
