Pioneering a low-noise ro-pax ship

Wärtsilä has equipped Stena’s new ro-pax vessel, “Ala’suinu”, with controllable pitch propellers, making it the first such vessel to achieve the DNV Silent(E) notation for reducing underwater noise emissions. Built at CMJL Shipyard in China and leased to Marine Atlantic, the 203 m vessel will operate between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland from June 2024.

The Silent(E) notation aims to protect marine ecosystems by ensuring vessels minimise underwater radiated noise. Wärtsilä's design maintains optimal performance and efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The project also includes an integrated hybrid propulsion system, featuring main and auxiliary engines, exhaust gas cleaning, LNG Pac, reduction gearboxes, bow thrusters, and advanced automation and communication systems. (pb)
