Pilot error suspected in Vilnius cargo plane crash
Lithuanian authorities believe human error was the likely cause of the Boeing B737-400 cargo aircraft crash in Vilnius on 25 November 2024.
Prosecutors have requested that Spanish authorities issue a notice of suspicion and question the recovering pilot under a European investigation order.
Analysis of flight data recorders, cockpit voice recordings and site inspections indicated that the aircraft’s hydraulics system – which controls slat deployment – had been switched off, likely leading to the crash. Other causes have been ruled out.
The pre-trial investigation is led by the general prosecutor’s office and the Lithuanian criminal police bureau. The probe continues under articles covering negligent homicide, serious injury, property damage and aircraft maintenance violations. Sixteen individuals have been recognised as victims in the case.
