Philippines starts "stinky fruit" flights to China

A first batch of fresh Philippine durian, following the bilateral agreement sealed during the state visit of president Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in Beijing early January this year, was flown from Davao to China last week.

The 28 t cargo was sourced from producers and processors in Mindanao, particularly in Region XI, that passed the stringent requirements of China’s General Administration Customs. Prior to that, the GACC had released the list of five qualified facilities and 58 farms that received the "green light" from the Chinese government.

The deal around the South-East Asian fruit, which is distinctive for its strong odour, is expected to gain USD 260 million in revenue for the local durian industry. (ah)
