Paving the way for a new bridge

The German federal government will provide funding to rebuild the Köhlbrand crossing, one of the most important traffic axis over the southern part of the Elbe river in northern Germany, the federal ministry for transport (BMVI) said.

Inaugurated in 1974, the bridge is 3,600 m long and 53 m high. It links the Elbe island Wilhemsburg with the federal motorway and the western and eastern parts of the port of Hamburg. A large part of commercial and long-haul traffic connected with the port passes over this bridge.

The current Köhlbrand crossing is expected to remain operational until 2030. A feasibility study for the planning of a new Köhlbrand crossing is underway. (ben)
