Partners for hybrid ferry conversion
Scandlines has selected Wärtsilä to provide the electrical systems for converting two ferries on the Puttgarden-Rødby route to plug-in hybrids. After the conversion, around 80% of the energy required for a crossing will be electric. The move is part of Scandlines' goal to achieve emission-free operations on this route by 2030 and zero emissions in all operations by 2040.
Starting in August 2025, the project involves replacing a diesel generator with a 5-MWh energy storage system. The ro-ro ferries selected for conversion are the 142 m long “Deutschland” and “Schleswig-Holstein”.
Wärtsilä will engineer, deliver, and oversee the installation and commissioning of the new systems. The investment totals EUR 31 million, with up to 40% funded by Germany's federal ministry for digital and transport. (pb)
