'P&O Liberté' begins Dover-Calais sailings

P&O Ferries has launched the 'P&O Liberté', its second hybrid vessel, for commercial sailings between Dover and Calais. Designed for the English Channel, the 'P&O Liberté', along with its sister ship 'P&O Pioneer', is part of the fusion-class fleet and reduces carbon emissions by up to 40% through a hybrid power generation system. Both ships, representing a GBP 250 million investment, are 230 m long and over 47,000 gt each.

The 'P&O Pioneer', which began service in June last year, is the world's largest double-ended hybrid ferry. The vessels are expected to make over 100,000 Channel crossings in their lifetime. They are part of the shipping company's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, with almost 50,000 t cut in 2023 following a reduction of over 85,000 t in 2022.

The new ships offer enhanced facilities for passengers and freight drivers, including dedicated driver areas, the largest onboard duty-free shopping with P&O’s travel retail partner World Duty Free, diverse dining options, and a club lounge. (pb)
