P&O Ferries charting a cleaner course

P&O Ferries significantly reduced its carbon emissions in 2023, cutting nearly 50,000 t with the introduction of a new hybrid ferry and the fleet support centre for fuel and energy efficiency. This follows a reduction of over 85,000 t in 2022. T

he fleet support centre uses SmartShip technology and fuel meters to track and decrease fuel and energy consumption. Key routes saw lower fuel consumption in 2023, with further reductions expected in 2024.

The hybrid ferry “P&O Pioneer”, introduced in June 2023, uses up to 40% less fuel per crossing on the Dover-Calais route. P&O Ferries aims to continue decarbonising its operations with the addition of a second hybrid ferry, “P&O Liberté”, in March 2024. (pb)
