Otago and Napier investing in sustainable dredging

The Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with New Zealand’s Port Otago and its partner Napier Port for the delivery of a ‘Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger’ 1000 (TSHD 1000). The 60 m vessel, featuring a 1,000 m³ hopper capacity, twin azimuth thrusters and a bow thruster, is designed for sustainable operations, including ballast water-free functionality, and sports a ‘Green Passport’ under IMO standards.

The TSHD 1000 will enhance dredging efficiency and environmental compliance at Port Chalmers and Dunedin, replacing the aging vessel “New Era” in early 2027.

The dredger, Built in Shipyard 189 in Vietnam, reflects Damen’s and the ports’ shared commitment to sustainability and operational modernisation. (pb)
