Ongoing online retail boom
The booming online trade is set to continue to grow in Germany and elsewhere in December. According to a market study published by the German e-commerce and mail-order association (Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel Deutschland BEVH) recently, online revenues in the first half of 2020 grew by 9.2% year-on-year.
Christmas business is expected to strengthen this trend significantly, due to the outbreak of Covid-19. After all, a significant majority of Germans (65%) will buy Christmas presents online, according to a recent study by Rakuten Advertising.
Germany’s national parcel and express logistics association (Bundesverband Paket und Expresslogistik BIEK) has forecast that approximately 420 million parcels will be delivered in Germany in November and December. If this prediction comes true, then the figure will stand about 60 million or around 20% higher than in the same period last year. (sh)
