On route towards low-carbon business
Norfolk Southern has developed a climate transition plan (CTP) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 42% by 2024. The US class I Railway's CTP will focus in part on fuel management and consumption. The measures include innovative technologies and operating practices to reduce the amount of fuel used by the locomotive fleet.
Specifically, Norfolk Southern's CPT aims to improve fuel efficiency by 13% by 2027 and increase the use of renewable energy by 30% by 2030 and of biofuels by 20% by 2034. Norfolk Southern handles more than 7 million carloads annually. Its intermodal network in the Eastern USA connects major container port on the Atlantic coast, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes.
