Old loco – new lease of life
Wabtec has delivered a completely transformed locomotive to Canadian National Railways (CN) – the first locomotive in CN’s 50-unit order to be modernised by Wabtec. The CN locomotive was built in 2000 and over the past 22 years has hauled 20 million t of freight over 3,2 million km all over North America.
The locomotive wasn’t ready to retire yet, however, despite its mileage. Wabtec transformed CN’s Dash 9 by converting it from a DC propulsion system to modern-day AC propulsion and upgrading the control systems.
The modernisation not only extends the locomotive’s life but also improved its fuel efficiency by more than 17%, reliability by 30% and haulage ability by more than 55%. (ben)
