Not so "safe"
Last Sunday, 31 March 2024, a B727 freighter of the Kenyan Safe Air Company (SAC), flying in supplies from Juba (JUB), crashed at South Sudan's Malakal airport (MAK). At least, all seven people on board were able to evacuate the plane - safely.
The Upper Nile state governor’s press office explained the "terrible incident" in which "the plane encountered problems while landing and was forced to make an emergency landing".
The aircraft skidded off the runway and crashed into the debris of another plane, an African Express Airways MD-82 that had crashed at the site on 9 February 2024. Here too, there were no injuries.
Governor James Odhok Oyay expressed his concerns about the state of the airport and its ability to handle emergencies. He called for the expansion and improvements of the runway to meet safety standards. (ah)
