North East line ready for heavier goods train
India’s Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has completed electrification work on the 649 rkm stretch from Katihar to Guwahati, enabling seamless electric traction between New Delhi and Guwahati. It is yet another effort by NFR to integrate the Indian capital into a green transport network, the Indian government said.
Now that the Guwahati station is fully electrified, other trains from the northeast can be switched over to run on electric traction from Guwahati to the national capital and Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities without a change of traction en route. Heavier goods trains can now also be operated on this line. (ben)
