New Zealand’s Northland rail closed for upgrade
Construction work for the modernisation of New Zealand’s Northland rail work has started. Between Swanson and Wahangarei, no more train services will run for a longer period during the construction work, said Kiwi Rail.
In the first phase, the upgrade project includes replacing five bridges on the line and lowering the tracks in 13 tunnels. If everything goes to plan, trains will be able to pull hi-cube containers on the Northland Line by Christmas.
The Northland Line is around 100-years old, and was underused over the last years because of its condition. Freight volumes in Northland are expected to increase from currently 18 million t a year to 23 million t by 2042. (ben)
