New York welcomes new pilot boat

The New York Harbour and the Sandy Hook Pilots Association recently welcomed its new pilot station boat "New York". The unit, a converted oil spill response vessel (OSRV), which, with a length of 64 m, is the largest in the Sandy Hook Pilots fleet.

Its predecessor of the same name, a symbol of safety and a familiar sight in the Port of New York and New Jersey harbour for nearly 50 years, made its last transit up the Ambrose Channel from the pilot station in February 2022. Over the last 50 years, the vessel assumed vital roles during some of the worst days in the history of this country, including the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

The new vessel was made available by Marine Spill Response Corporation after Sandy Hook Pilots had spent years searching for the right vessel to replace the aging unit. (sh)
