New York-New Jersey on track
The US Port of New York and New Jersey (Panynj) is also benefitting from the shift of cargo flows from the West to the East Coast.
Altogether, about 19% more cargo was handled in October 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. Yet, volumes fell by 5.9% compared to September 2022, when the seaport handled more than 842,000 teu. The Port Authority spoke of the end of the "seasonal peak of activity associated with holiday merchandise".
With regards to measures to tackle congestion, the port recently implemented a quarterly "container imbalance fee" as a new surcharge for ocean carriers. Effective since September 2022, the fee was put in place to reduce the number of excess empty containers dwelling at the port.
Since the introduction of the surcharge, the seaport has moved the equivalent 200,000 teu of empty containers from its facilities. (sh)
