New terminal for trans-Eurasian railfreight
The “East-West” centre in Chernyakhovsk in the Russian Kaliningrad region is now open. The new rail terminal can manage 450,000 standard containers (teu) a year and will transfer the containers from wide-gauge (1,520 mm) tracks onto narrower European gauge (1,435 mm) tracks.
The hub will specialise in import/export transport and the handling of transit containers between Europe and Asia. In the medium term, it is expected to become one of the most important transport hubs along the New Silk Road, supporting UTLC ERA's railfreight services on the China-Europe-China route. The company plans to handle up to two pairs of trains a week in the terminal. (ben)
