New tech riding the rails in North America

UP has equipped 50 rail cars with a GPS device from Rail Pulse. The system provides real-time information and visibility of the car’s location, condition and health to shippers, rail car owners and railroads.

The GPS device is now undergoing initial trials, with a larger launch to follow in early 2023. UP will then also look to expand the Rail Pulse programme on its rail car fleet.

The effort is part of an industry focus to improve visibility down to the track level while generating efficiencies to make rail transport more competitive versus trucking.

Rail Pulse was formed in 2020 as a coalition of rail car owners to increase safety, efficiency, and visibility in the rail industry with new technologies. (ben)
