New Sydney airport attracts forwarders' interest

Ten of Australia’s major freight companies have signed memoranda of understanding with Western Sydney Airport (SWZ), which is on track to open in 2026.

The MoUs will see the airport work with the air freight industry to design concepts for an on-airport freight precinct and begin discussions about potential operations from Sydney’s new airport.

Australian airports currently transport +1 million t of air freight annually and these volumes are forecast to grow considerably over the next decade. The first stage of SWZ has the potential to process around 220,000 t of air freight each year through its proposed on-airport freight facility, with multiple dedicated freighter aircraft stands. This is set to scale up with demand, potentially handling 1.8 million t of air freight each year in the future. (ah)
