New rules for road haulage traffic in the EU
Parliament and the member states of the EU have found a compromise for the first mobility package. This brings the European Union a step closer to achieving a stronger harmonisation of the rules for European road haulage traffic.
The compromise introduces changes for drivers in international traffic, giving them the option to choose two consecutive shortened weekly rest periods, if drivers do not spend this time in their country of residence or in the country where their company is headquartered.
To ensure better control, a new generation of smarter tachographs shall become compulsory in all heavy trucks by 2025, and for trucks under 3.5 t this ruling will be imposed as from July 2026. The compromise still needs the definite seal of approval from the council of ministers and the parliament. (ben)
