New rail service between Padua and southern Italy

Mercitalia, part of FS Italiane, has launched a freight transport service in Italy linking Padova Interporto to terminals in Bari and Catania. The first phase throughout the Covid-19 emergency period initially involves transporting mainly essential goods, and then in a second phase, processing other EU goods currently at a standstill.

The new rail service starts with three roundtrips a week and will be increased to six by summer. The new 'multi-supply-chain' service was devised by Mercitalia Rail to carry heavy, bulk and palletised goods, both in a conventional (tanks, mobile vessels, containers) and intermodal manner (P400 semi-trailers, only to Bari), with two business supply chains that usually travel separately.
