New port strategy of Djibouti continues

On 22 February 2018 the State of Djibouti prematurely terminated the Doraleh container terminal concession, which was granted in 2006 to Doraleh Container Terminal (DCT), a company mainly managed by DP World.

While the legal proceedings around the withdrawal of the concession continue, the Doraleh container terminal is now operated by SGTD, a Djiboutian company with 100% public capital. SGTD is a cornerstone in Djibouti's ambitious aim to become a trading and logistics hub between Asia, Africa and the rest of the world.

The new multipurpose port on the same site (DMP, May 2017) and the opening of the ports of Goubet and Tadjourah (June 2017) are part of this strategy, as is the development of the new free zone (inaugurated in July 2018), and the effective start of the new rail link between Djibouti and Addis Ababa (January 2018).
