New Mexican offspring for Hamburg Süd
Hamburg Süd recently held a ceremony to name a containership at the port of Veracruz (Mexico). Now known as the "Polar Mexico", the vessel was sponsored by Claudia Dávila, wife of Carlos Ayala, logistics and distribution director of Alpek Polyester, a subsidiary of the Alfa Group, a major corporate group in Mexico.
Mexico's import and export economy is based on sectors such as automobile manufacturing, chemicals, fruits and brewing, and the “Polar Mexico” will operate services connected to this sector. The 230 m long vessel with a 37.3 m beam can carry 3,800 teu.
The new ship is part of a group of four structurally identical vessels in the Polar class that were built for the German carrier by the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding.
Hamburg Süd vessels also call the Mexican ports of Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas. (kd)
