New locomotives for phosphate haulage in Tunisia
The Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) has received ten new locomotives from their US manufacturer Progress Rail. They are the first batch of 20 locomotives that will be acquired for hauling phosphates. The remaining ten units will be delivered later this year.
SNCFT transports phosphate between six mining sites of the Tunisian Phosphate Company CPG, to processing plants of the Tunisian Chemical Group.
The locomotives were produced at Progress Rail’s Muncie-based plant IN (USA). They are designed for the area’s hot, dry climate and rough terrain, including sandy conditions. (ben)
