New helpline for female seafarers

On this year's International Women’s Day (8 March), the maritime welfare charity Sailors’ Society launched a dedicated 24/7 helpline for female seafarers and cadets. Funded by marine insurer Skuld, the service offers confidential emotional support, crisis assistance and peer-to-peer connections with female responders.“

Being a seafarer is challenging, but women at sea face additional hurdles. Some may feel more comfortable talking to another woman who understands their situation,” said Sailors’ Society CEO Sara Baade.

Skuld CEO Ståle Hansen emphasised the need for gender equality. “A diverse workforce is key to the industry’s future.”

The initiative complements the charity’s female peer-to-peer support groups, further strengthening the support network for women in the maritime sector. (ah)
