New cargo project at Newcastle airport
Newcastle airport has announced the launch of its AirLink project, a 69,700 m² cargo hub set to boost the economy of northeastern England by GBP 165 million annually and create up to 2,600 jobs.
The development will serve cargo operators, forwarders and ground handling agents. The project is being brought to market in partnership with Naylors Gavin Black. The site, located south of the runway, will provide direct apron access for efficient cargo handling, benefiting industries like pharmaceuticals and automotive.
Alice Andreasen, chief sustainability and communications officer at Newcastle airport, highlighted AirLink’s role in strengthening the region’s logistics sector and global trade connections. The airport, which handled over 6,000 t of cargo in 2024, is now seeking business partners for the site. A planning application will be submitted later this year, with a preferred developer already in place. (ah)
