New carbon inset scheme at London Gateway
DP World has launched the world’s first container port “carbon inset programme” at its UK logistics hubs, London Gateway and Southampton, starting 1 January 2025. The six-month trial offers importers 50 kg of independently certified carbon credits for every loaded container moved through its terminals.
Unlike traditional offsets, these inset credits reflect direct emission reductions within the supply chain through Unifeeder’s use of lower-carbon marine fuels. They help importers cut scope 3 emissions while meeting sustainability targets.
If 50% of importers participate, over 11,000 t of fossil fuels could be replaced, reducing carbon emissions by 10,000 t. The initiative builds on DP World’s modal shift programme, which reduced emissions by over 17,000 t in its first year. Businesses must register by 31 December 2024 to join the trial and receive free carbon inset credits. (pb)
