Norfolk Southern Railways completed USD 1 billion in infrastructure projects in 2023. Aimed to enhance safety and productivity, the upgrades involved all of the company's 31,400 km long network in 22 states.
Specifically, the US class I railway carried out 1,000 track km of rail work, installed 2.1 million replacement cross ties, surfaced 2.8 km of track and added 523 panel turnouts and 14 crossing diamonds.
The projects also comprised the installation of 40 bridges and 32,743 bridge ties. As new safety measures, the railway put in 108 hot box detectors and 17 acoustic bearing detectors and built two digital train inspection portals. (ben)
