Netherlands and Rhine: low-water plans
Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland (KBN), the Dutch inland shipping association, has released its proposals to address low-water challenges in inland shipping in the Netherlands and on the Rhine.
While there is currently no low-water issue, the plan outlines solutions to ensure reliable, climate-resistant freight and passenger transport over water. Low water poses limitations on inland shipping, affecting loading capacity and navigation.
The measures include installing dams, targeted dredging and adapting ship construction for greater loading capacity during low tide. Collaboration among various stakeholders, including governments, shippers and waterway managers, is essential to create a resilient waterway network capable of withstanding low water challenges, KBN says.
