Nestlé significantly cuts sea freight emissions
The food and beverage company Nestlé has significantly reduced its greenhouse gas emissions in sea freight by using Maersk's Eco Delivery solution for all cargo transported by Maersk in 2023. This initiative, which can be extended beyond 2024, uses second-generation biofuels made from waste materials to replace conventional fossil fuels, cutting emissions by over 80%.
Maersk aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in all business areas by 2040, with eco delivery being a key offering.
The agreement makes Nestlé one of Maersk's largest Eco Delivery customers, reflecting a growing trend among leading companies to adopt this solution, despite the additional cost.
Customers are exempt from future EU Emissions Trading System surcharges and benefit from fixed prices for green fuels. Eco Delivery will soon be available for air freight and land transport in certain regions. (pb)
