Naming ceremony for "HMM Algeciras"
The world's largest containership to date was constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) at its Okpo shipyard in Geoje (South Korea). The South Korean shipping company HMM, which recently changed its brand from Hyundai Merchant Marine to the acronym, held a ceremony to name the new vessel "HMM Algeciras". It has a 23,964 teu capacity and is the first of twelve sisterships, the delivery of which will take place up to autumn 2020.
In September 2018, HMM signed contracts with the three shipyards, namely DSME, HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries) and SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries), for a total of 20 environmentally friendly mega-container ships. DSME is building seven, SHI five boxships with a 24,000 teu capacity, and HHI is constructing eight 16,000 teu containerships that will go into service in Q2/2021. (mw)
