Namibia: 417 km rail upgrade
The African Development Bank (AFDB) has approved a USD 196 million loan to modernise Namibia’s rail infrastructure.
The project entails building 207 km of new rail track between Kranzberg and Otjiwarongo, which includes constructing 16 bridges, renovating two stations, and procuring 55,000 t of rails to build 518 km of track. Another task will be to upgrade the railway signalling system.
The investment would bring to 417 km the cumulative rail infrastructure upgraded by the AFDB following a previous renovation of the 210 km stretch between Walvis Bay and Kranzberg.
The recently approved loan represents 51.8% of the project’s total cost, the rest will be provided by the Namibian government. (ben)
