In March 2020, the volume of freight traffic at the port of Barcelona totalled 4.9 million t, a drop of 8.3% compared to March 2019. The negative consequences of the coronavirus pandemic is also making an impact on containers - a total of almost 220,000 teu lifted is a hefty 18.9% less than in March 2019. While imports shrank by 19% -the drop was mostly noted in the Asian market (-24%), exports increased by 8%. The motorways of the sea registered a 4% increase UTI traffic in March. This positive outcome is partially attributable to the service between Barcelona and Civitavecchia (+22%) as that line expanded capacity with the addition of two vessels. (mw)
