More support for the switch from road to rail
DP World in UK is raising its incentive for transferring freight from road to rail by almost 50% to GBP 100 (EUR 117). The modal shift programme, which is being trialled at DP World Southampton for twelve months, initially offered GBP 70 (EUR 82) to customers who move import-laden containers via rail to a railhead within 225 km of the Southampton logistics hub. The programme has the potential to prevent about 30,000 t of CO2 being emitted per year, DP World said.
Since the incentive was introduced in September last year, rail services at Southampton have increased their share from 21% (January to June) to 27% (September to December), particularly in the Midlands rail network. (ben)
