More rail services between North and South Italy

The Italian cargo terminal Verona-Giovinazzo will see an increase from 12 to 18 freight trains per week linking the logistics hub Quadrante Europa with the terminal in Puglia in Southern Italy.

This 50% rise in frequencies was also made possible by FS Italiane’s subsidiary Mercitalia Rail, which developed the traction service by deploying latest-generation locomotives and wagons.

The trains have a load capacity of 1,600 t, a length of 550 m and a loading gauge aligned with the highest European standard (P400).

The new schedule of 18 trains per week ensures that around 27,500 intermodal transport units are taken off the road each year to save more than 1,200 t of CO2 annually. (ben)
