More options for shipping to and from Iowa

Canadian National Railway (CN) has closed an agreement to acquire Iowa Northern Railway (IANR) and extend its US rail network. The US short line railroad operates 440 track km in Iowa. IANR serves agricultural and industrial markets in the upper Midwest covering many goods, including biofuels and grain.

The transaction allows CN to create single-line services to North American destinations, while preserving access to existing carrier options.

IANR was formed in 1984 and was taken over by railroader Dan Sabin in 1994. At that time, the railroad handled 15,000 revenue cars annually, now it handles over 60,000 cars per year. The US Surface Transportation Board (STB) is expected to publish its decision on the transaction in 2024. (ben) www.cn.ca
