More men for Cape Town
South African state-owned port operator Transnet is deploying further staff to its container and multipurpose terminals at the Port of Cape Town.
Backlogs caused by the coronavirus pandemic have resulted in reduced activities, with the container terminal operating at 60% of capacity and the multipurpose terminal at 75%, Transnet said in a press release.
Crane operators and drivers, all volunteers having been tested negatively on Covid-19, will arrive from the Durban container terminal to assist with the movement of cargo and ensure staff availability.
Currently, shipping companies have begun to bypass Cape Town due to backlogs sometimes lasting for weeks, and fruit exporters in South Africa have started to truck their time-sensitive products to the ports of Port Elizabeth and Durban. (mw)
