More feeder traffic in Hamburg

From November, container transfers between the large terminals in the Port of Hamburg will be introduced to relieve road transport.

The project was initiated by the Danish shipping company Unifeeder, with the Hamburg software company Dakosy and Dihla Dakosy, an interest group representing Hamburg-based liner agents, in support.

The container transfers will relieve the port infrastructure by reducing the number of truck journeys between the terminals, shorten waiting times at the terminals and cut CO2 emissions. The project is based on a new digital process which also maps customs handling.

In total, the Port of Hamburg counted around 3.3 million teu in transhipments in 2021, whereby not every transhipment entails a journey between terminals.

"As the largest feeder carrier in Northern Europe, we have up to 85 terminal calls in Hamburg per week and thus sufficient capacity to transport additional containers within the port," says Florian Pein, area director Western and Central Europe at Unifeeder, as he outlined the concept.

The new service includes container transfers by feeder ship between the HHLA terminals CTA, CTT, CTB and Eurogate, with the South-West Terminal to be added to the loop at a later date. (sh)
