More details on Finnlines' construction programme
The Finnish shipping company Finnlines, owned by the Grimaldi group, is building three new RoRo ferries of the Superstar class at the Jingling Chinese shipyard. Delivery is scheduled for 2023. The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its hybrid power conversion system to these units.
According to the shipping company, these vessels will be its “flagships”, both for their size and for the technology. With a length of 230 m they will have the capacity to accommodate 1,100 passengers and 5,100 linear meters of road cargo. They will also have the highest Finnish and Swedish classification for ice navigation.
The hybrid solution, which includes a 5000 kWh energy storage system, will enable these ships to operate with zero emissions while in port and to meet the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) green plus class notation.
Emanuele Grimaldi, CEO of Finnlines, commented: “We want to lead the development of high-quality ro-ro and ro-pax services in the Baltic Sea region. Our EUR 500 million new construction programme will ensure that we continue providing premium services to our customers.” (mw)
